Waterfalls of Sorrow

Posted on January 16, 2026 by ruthbillingsley
As the deer pants for water streams,
So my soul pants now for You.
My soul thirsts for the living God.
When can I meet You anew?

My tears are my food night and day.
Men say to me all day long,
“Where is your God, your Lord?”
Why can’t I trust and be strong?

These I remember and recall
As I now pour out my soul.
How I used to go with the crowd,
Leading them in my control.

Why are you downcast, O my soul?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God and praise Him.
“My Savior and my God you’ll be.”

Deep calls to deep, down, far below
In the roar of waterfalls.
All of your waves, swells, and breakers
Have come and swept over all.

By day the Lord directs His love.
At night His song is with me –
A prayer to the God of my life.
A prayer of relief, I plea.

Why are you downcast, O my soul?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in the mighty God,
My Savior and Lord, I’m free.
(Based on Psalm 42)

“Deep calls to deep at the noise of Your waterfalls; All Your waves and billows have gone over me.” Have you ever felt like you are drowning? Troubles, illness, trials, and uncertainties keep coming like a never ending waterfalls that sweep us over the edge and into the depths of the sea. Where do we turn? Like a deer that is searching for water, we should thirst for God. You have a loving, living God who is always with you in every situation. He can bring you through if you focus on Him not your circumstances. He created the universe and holds it all together so you can trust in Him. He never fails.

Focus on all the ways the Lord has blessed you and you will have less time to think about the “what ifs” of life. Ask the Lord to protect your mind and your heart. Remember answered prayers. Praise Him. These difficult days will be over and you’ll realize that the Lord was there all the time, teaching you to be content in all circumstances. We need God in times of our waterfalls of sorrow.
