The Glory of the Rainbow

Posted on August 7, 2020 by ruthbillingsley

We have had a lot of rain this week in Arkansas, a good opportunity to see God’s handiwork!  Rainbows are an awesome phenomenon to witness.  It doesn’t matter how many times I have seen one, each and every time it leaves me in awe.   I have to stop and praise God for His creative beauty and wondrous power.  Heavenly circumstances that perfectly align the sun, water, and the human eye form a rainbow, which is scientifically quite complicated, but with God a simple command.

Crested Butte, Colorado
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”
Psalm 19:1

We are blessed to have just a glimpse of God’s character.  A reminder of His promise which began in Genesis 9:13-15, “I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth… the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.” It continues in Ezekiel 1:28,  “Like the appearance of a rainbow in a cloud on a rainy day, so was the appearance of the brightness all around it.  This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of God.  So when I saw it, I fell on my face.”  And will conclude in Revelation 4:3, “And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow round the throne, in appearance like an emerald.”

The rainbow has significance in our past, our present, and our future. What can we learn from God today?  The rainbow is a reminder that despite our hardships and difficulties, He is merciful and faithful. In the midst of life’s storms it is often hard to spot a rainbow, but remember, these miracles of the sky only appear after the storm.  Having a difficult day?   Look for the rainbow through your tears.  God’s love will shine through.

Captiva Island, Florida
Rainbows

Each of God’s colors,
Reflected by light,
An arc of beauty,
Shines brilliant and bright.

Forty-two degrees
Opposite the sun;
Everyone will see
Their own special one.

Rainbows viewed in rain
In spray, fog, or dew
Are water droplets,
Reflecting right through.

The seven colors,
Red, orange, yellow, green,
Blue and indigo,
Plus purple is seen.

A double rainbow
Is reflecting twice;
Opposite colors
Looking very nice.

It’s God’s own promise,
“No, never again!”
Sealed with a rainbow,
His words never end.

The sky’s in God’s hands.
Beauty to behold.
We wonder in awe;
God’s glory retold.

When you see a rainbow
In the clearing sky,
Remember God loves you.
Praise and glorify.

“The heavens declare the glory of God;
 the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”
Psalm 19:1
