God’s Omnipotence

Posted on May 2, 2025 by ruthbillingsley

Part One

The Lord spoke to Job
Out of the whirlwind,
“Who are you to speak?
You don’t comprehend.

“Now, act like a man.
I will question you.
You will answer me.
Listen, hear what’s true.

“Where were you when I
Laid earth’s foundation?
Do you understand
All of creation?

“Who marked earth’s measures,
And how do you know
What holds it in place,
Above and below?

“Who laid its cornerstone
When morning stars sang
And all of God’s sons
Shouted while joy rang?

“Who shut the sea’s doors
When water burst out,
When I made the clouds,
Thick darkness about?

“I fixed My limit
And set bars and doors,
Ordered every wave
To stop at all shores."
(Based on Job 38:1-11)

God chose to speak to Job from a whirlwind, rather than a quiet voice, to show His power and mystery. The whirlwind symbolizes God’s mighty presence in creation. This powerful display was a way for God to challenge Job’s questions and demonstrate that he could not fully grasp God’s ways. This questioning taught and humbled Job and led him to a greater understanding of God.

As we think about these questions, may we see the power and majesty of God as creator and sustainer, and may it bring us to a greater understanding of His love and care. Reflect on God’s creation today.
