A Simple Gift

Posted on June 12, 2020 by ruthbillingsley

It was a simple idea that became the worldwide outreach of Operation Christmas Child – a project of Samaritan’s Purse – to minister to children in war-torn and famine-stricken countries.  It began in 1993 with the idea of helping the children of Bosnia who had been left homeless, injured, and hopeless.  Since then, it has grown to 178 million shoebox gifts to children in more than 160 countries and territories.  Not only does each shoebox have school supplies, hygiene items, and fun toys, a gospel tract is included to share about Jesus Christ and God’s love. The children are also invited to a 12-lesson discipleship program, “The Greatest Journey.”

Boundless Grace Baptist Church, where I am a member, has been participating in this ministry for 8 years. We began in 2013 packing 92 boxes. This year we will pack 1000. We have a church-wide packing party in November. Donations and fundraisers, including a pie auction, cover the cost of shipping. Our boxes have gone to children in Mexico, Guatemala and other countries. We feel blessed to be able to give to this wonderful ministry that will make a difference in the eternal life of families all over the world. Giving has many blessings!

The Blessings of Giving

Give and you will receive,
Good measure and pressed down.
It’s shaken together
Spilling out all around.

Watch the generous soul.
He will be rich indeed.
When he waters others
His blessings will exceed.

For all things we possess
Come from our God alone.
Our abundance and gifts
Are His and not our own.

So, God, we honor You
With all of our treasure.
Our first fruits of increase
To the Lord we measure.

So our barns will be filled
With plenty when needed.
Our vats will over flow.
Our rewards exceeded.

Give willingly to all
Who comes and asks of you,
And he who can’t repay
Your forgiveness is due.

Try Me now and witness
What will open for you,
The windows in heaven
Countless blessing so true.

Poured out in abundance
Until they overflow,
More than you can receive,
More than you’ll ever know.

God is able to make
All grace to you abound,
So you will have enough
For every good work found.

Let each one of us give
And purpose from the start,
Without any grudging,
But with a cheerful heart.
