Creation’s Glory

Posted on September 1, 2023 by ruthbillingsley
My view of the supermoon or blue moon on Wednesday.

What is a supermoon? As the moon travels around our planet, its path is an elongated circle. When it is near its closest point to earth at the same time as it is full, it is called a “supermoon.” This week the moon was exceptionally close to Earth, nearly 17,000 miles closer than average. It was 8% larger than a normal full moon and 15% brighter. It was a sight to behold and gave us a beautiful view of God’s glorious creation. This will occur again in 2037.

O Lord, Our Lord,
How majestic is Your name.
All the earth rejoices.
All the heavens proclaim.

From the lips of children
Your glory is praised.
They silence all enemies.
Your banner is raised.

Consider Your heavens,
Which You put in place,
The work of Your fingers,
The moon, stars, and space.

What is man
That You care for him?
Made lower than angels
Despite all his sin.

You crowned him with glory,
Made him ruler of all,
The beast of the field,
The herds, large and small,

The birds of the air,
The fish of the sea,
The lion and lamb,
And all that run free.

O Lord, our Lord,
How majestic is Your name.
All the earth rejoices.
All the heavens proclaim.
(Interpreted from Psalm 8)

With the naked eye, one can see about 5,000 stars. With a four-inch telescope, one can see about 2 million stars. With a 200-inch mirror of a great observatory, one can see more than a billion stars. The universe is so big that if one were to travel at the speed of light, it would take 40 billion years to reach the edge of the universe. Considering the heavens makes us see the greatness of God.

Each of us is merely a tiny dot that live on a speck of dust in our universe. The God of our complex universe chose us, sees us, loves us, and cares for us. When I think how small and helpless we are in God’s awesome creation, I am thankful that His love is as great as His power.

  • How can we apply this psalm?
  • We should bow in awe before our majestic creator.
  • We should treat each person with value and respect as beings created in God’s image.
  • We should stand firmly against abortion.
  • We should stand against the idea of evolution, which denies that we are created in God’s image.
  • We should raise our children to love, fear, and serve God.
  • We should be good stewards of God’s creation.
  • We should take pleasure in whatever work God has given us to do.
  • We should enjoy God through His creation.
