A Song of Moses

Posted on June 24, 2022 by ruthbillingsley

Exodus 15:1-18

I will sing to the Lord,
For He has set us free.
The horse and its rider,
He has thrown in the sea.

God is my strength and song,
My salvation always.
My Lord will I exalt.
My father’s God I’ll praise.

The Lord is a man of war.
Yes, the Lord is His name.
He cast into the sea
 Pharaoh’s army of shame.

His chosen captains drowned.
They sank down like a stone.
The depths have covered them.
 God’s power now is known.

Your right hand, O Lord God,
 Is glorious and grand.
It dashed the enemy
In pieces, like You planned.

And in Your excellence,
You’ve overthrown and doomed
Those who rose against You,
 For Your wrath has consumed.

The blast of Your nostrils
Gathered floods like a heap.
Water all together
In the heart of the deep.

“I will seek and pursue,”
The enemy has cried.
“I will soon overtake
And the spoil divide.

I will be satisfied,
As I draw my sharp sword.
My hand will destroy them.
 Death will be their reward.”

But You blow Your mighty wind.
 The sea covers them all.
They sink like heavy lead,
As mighty waters fall.

Who is like You, O Lord,
 Glorious, holy, true?
 Fearful in our praises
For the wonders You do.

The earth swallowed them up,
As You stretched out Your hand.
Then You, in Your mercy,
Lead us forth on dry land.

The people You redeemed,
 In Your strength You guided
To Your holy dwelling,
And there You provided.

Enemies will hear You,
And they will be afraid.
 Their sorrow and dismay
Take hold as You invade.

Fear and dread will fall on them
By the greatness of Your arm.
They will be as still as stone,
And Your people free from harm.

‘Til Your people pass over,
Purchased and planted by You.
Bringing them to the mountain,
 Inheritance for the few.

In this place, which You have made,
The dwelling that You own;
It’s a holy place of promise
Where safety and refuge are known.

Like the children of Israel,
May I find this resting place
Where the Lord reigns forever;
The land of love and grace.

After the Israelites crossed the Red Sea on dry ground, Moses offered thanks to God. These verses praise God for the salvation that no one in Israel thought possible. When we face our enemies, both without and within, we must remember how God finds a way for us to escape. He can deliver us from this world of sin. God encouraged love and obedience, but He is just and righteous and will have victory over evil.

God is powerful.
God provides.
God forgives.
God is faithful.
God keeps His promises.
Sing praises!
