I waited patiently for the Lord.
He turned and heard my desire.
He raised me out of the slimy pit.
Out of the mud and the mire.
He set my feet on a solid rock,
Gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song into my mouth,
Praise hymns to our God, so grand.
Many will see this and honor You.
They will trust You and be blessed.
They refuse to worship the false gods
Or by the proud be impressed.
Many are the wonders You have done,
The things You have planned for us.
If I were to speak and tell of them,
They’re too many to discuss.
(Based on Psalm 40:1-5)
In this psalm, David remembered that waiting patiently is an important part of worship. Each of us is called to wait throughout the seasons of our lives, but we must ask ourselves the question, “how patient are we?” In times of waiting, God is still at work. Just because you may not see, feel, or comprehend what God is doing around you, that does not change the fact that He is there. In times of waiting, we are challenged to remember God’s gracious and merciful acts toward us countless times. Worship is a response, and our attitude indicates how grateful our hearts are. Waiting patiently is an expression of trust.
He brings us out of horrible pits of mud and mire. Those are places of depressing surroundings, darkness, and helplessness. Do your circumstances seem helpless? Then read on. He sets our feet on solid rock. Who is our Rock? Jesus. He puts a new song in our mouths. Every day can be a new song of worship. Sing praises. It lifts you up.
When we trust and when we worship, we are blessed. His wonders become real, they are too many to be counted. Let a heart of worship become an attitude that is expressed in your daily actions and thoughts.
