I cried out to God for help.
I cried out for God to hear,
When I was in much distress,
I sought the Lord to come near.
At night I stretched out my hands.
Uncomforted was my soul.
I remembered You, O God,
And I groaned out of control.
I felt my spirit grow faint.
You kept my eyes from closing.
I was too troubled to speak.
I was thinking, supposing.
I thought about former days
And the tears of long ago.
I remembered my night songs.
My heart mused, desired to know.
Will the Lord spurn forever?
Will He never show favor?
Is His unfailing love gone?
Will His promises waiver?
Has God forgotten mercy?
Has compassion been withheld?
Then I thought, “I will appeal.”
To His hand I was compelled.
I will remember Your deeds,
The miracles of the Lord.
I’ll meditate on Your works,
Those mighty deeds, our reward.
Your ways, O God, are holy.
What God is so great, we say?
Miracles that You perform,
Power to us You display.
With Your mighty arm You save.
All Your people You redeem.
Sons of Jacob and Joseph
Holy God You reign supreme.
The waters saw You, O God.
The waters writhed and flailed.
The very depths were convulsed.
The clouds poured water and hailed.
With thunder the skies resound.
Back and forth Your arrows flash.
Thunder was in the whirlwind.
Lightning lit up with a crash.
The whole earth trembled and quaked.
Your path and the sea convene.
You led through the great waters,
Though Your footprints were not seen.
You led Your people, Your flock
By the way of Moses’ hand.
Led with the help of Aaron
To the fertile promised land.
(Based on Psalm 77)
This Psalm is helpful when we experience storms of life.
Verses 1 tell us to cry out to God for help. Verse 2 expresses the hopelessness when we try to face life’s conflicts within our own power. Then comes sleepless nights and no relief. The answer is to cry out to God in prayer. He hears and understands. He is in control.
Do you have questions, questions of why? Be real, yet reverent, be honest, yet humble. God wants to hear from you. He has promised to always be with you. Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart.”
Verses 16-20 describe the power of our storms. We experience wind, rain, hail, thunder, and lightning, but God leads us through every circumstance in our storm and we feel His peaceful presence.
Think of what God has done for you in the past. That gives you faith for the future. Worship, praise, and pray, “You delivered Israel and You will deliver me.”
Count Your Blessings
"When upon life's billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done."
“Stop telling God how big your storm is. Instead, tell the storm how big your God is.” Adrian Rogers
