Let not the wise man glory In his wisdom so smart, Or the mighty in strength, Or the rich set apart. But let him who glories Have glory in this, That he understands Me And he knows Me—such bliss. Know that I am the Lord. There is no one like Me. I show lovingkindness, And judgment I decree. I exercise righteousness Over all the earth. These things are my delight, For I am mighty in worth. So consider your calling Because you are not wise, Not powerful or noble: These things you recognize. For God has chosen these: The foolish, not the wise, The weak, not the strong, The lowly with no guise. So He might bring to nothing Everything we adore, That no one will be boasting Of anything more Than our Lord Jesus Christ, Our wisdom is He, Our only righteousness, Our one security. Sanctified and redeemed: All these, our reward. So boast if you must, But only in the Lord. Jeremiah 9:23-24 1 Corinthians 1:26-31
Who is wise? One who does not rely on the things of this world: knowledge, health, strength, or riches. These are false confidences. God did not choose philosophers, statesmen, or men of wealth and power to tell of the Gospel. He used humble servants to do His work. Today is the same. True knowledge of the Gospel is taught by His Word and Spirit to anyone who has faith and a willing heart.
Did God choose you? We live under the illusion that God needs greatness. No, He needs humble followers. Our only boasting is to tell what God has done. I have seen Him bring salvation to an elderly man, bring women out of addiction, bring children and families together, bring healing through prayer, bring love instead of fear, and bring salvation through a shoebox. All to God’s glory!
