Give Thanks

Posted on November 27, 2020 by ruthbillingsley

God chose to bring His people, the Israelites, into the desert before leading them to the Promised Land. His plan was to teach them life’s lessons of faith, trust, worship, and thanksgiving. This poem speaks of their journey.

Psalm 107:1-9
Give thanks to the Lord.
His goodness is sure.
His love and His Word
Forever endure.

Let the redeemed speak,
Those saved from their foe,
Those gathered from lands,
East, west, high and low.

Some wandered along
In desert wasteland
Not finding a way
To a place they planned.

They were all hungry,
Thirsty, in despair.
Their lives ebbed away.
Is hope anywhere?

Then they cried out to
The Lord who provides.
In their great trouble
He rescues, He guides.

He led them along
By a straight pathway,
To a safe city
Where they could all stay.

Let them give their thanks
To the Lord above,
For His mighty deeds
And unfailing love.

For He satisfies.
The thirsty He meets
And fills the hungry
With good things to eat.

This psalm expresses the thankfulness of God’s people for their deliverance from their enemies, from wandering, from hunger and from despair. They are singing praises for what the Lord has done for them.

We too wander along in our desert: trials, troubles and tribulations. We may lose our way, but we cry out to the Lord and He rescues us. We thank God each day for His rich blessings and unfailing love.

We can be easily discouraged. Often things do not go the way we plan. Remember God’s redemption. His redemption from our wandering, lost , and without hope. “Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6). We praise the One who leads us to a safe place to dwell, His heavenly home.

Give praise this Thanksgiving. God hears us in troubled times as well as in prosperous times. “God is good! All the time!”
