Here I am again on beautiful Captiva Island enjoying the sun, the beach and the shells. I did some research on the history of Captiva and the origin of its name. These are a few interesting facts:
- The first inhabitants were Calusa Indians who were war-like and fierce. They would attack any explorer who wandered ashore. By 1700 most had died out.
- The abundant shells were used for utensils, jewelry, tools, weapons and ornaments.
- Legend tells us that pirate Captain Jose Gaspar (1756-1821) held prisoners on Captiva Island. Women were held for ransom or served as wives for the pirates.
Captive is mentioned 95 times in the Bible. Most refer to God’s people being held captive by enemy nations. Today we are held captive by our own sin which causes pain, despair, and disgrace. Jesus Christ has come to free us from the chains that enslave us. Isaiah 61:1-3 is God’s promise to us that He will bind us up in His peace and will give freedom from the darkness of sin. He turns ashes of grief into beauty.

Beauty from Ashes Jesus has come for the broken-hearted; To bind them up in His peace; To give freedom for captives And from the darkness release. Jesus has come to proclaim His favor, His comfort for all who mourn; Giving hope for all who grieve And a crown instead of scorn. A crown of beauty instead of ashes; The oil of gladness for pain; Garments of praise for despair; Righteousness of Christ to gain. Instead of shame, receive forgiveness; A double portion of love. Every disgrace turned to joy, Redemption sent from above. Clothed me with heavenly garments Of salvation by His grace. Arrayed in a spotless robe, His righteousness I’ll embrace.
